The Seashore of Remembrance gives families the opportunity to remember and honour loved who have passed away. We write names in the sand under sunsets and draw butterflies for babies, children and adults of any age or gestation.

For families who have had their children's names written on Christian's Beach we now have options for you to have your child's name written again in time for anniversaries and birthdays.

The loss of a loved one is painful no matter what their age is. When young children pass on we weep for the time on Earth that they missed out on. For older loved ones, we weep for ourselves that we will not be able to share more special times with them.

Having your loved one's name written in the sand is a unique and beautiful way to honour and remember them. To read about purchasing a name in the sand please click here.

Q. How much do I have to pay to have a name written in the sand?

A. The cost of having a loved one's name written in the sand is $25 AUS. We will write the name at the beach under a sunset and email you the photograph in a high resolution digital jpeg.

Q. Can I get a discount if I purchase more than one photograph?

A. The cost of additional photographs are $20 AUS each.

Q. How long will it take to have my loved one's name written in the sand?

A. This all comes down to the weather that we are currently experiencing. It will usually be between 3 days and 2 weeks. You can receive weather updates for where we are in Perth at this link. We are currently in the middle of Winter so writing names may take a little longer than usual.

Q. I went to print my image but was told the photo was a too low res. Why is this?

A. We only ever send out high resolution jpegs. Sometimes if you have a monthly download limit on your internet provider will shrink the image so that you can just view it. You will need to contact them if your image comes through at a low res.

Q. Can I have more than one name written in the sand in the same photograph?

A.Unfortunately we are unable to write more than one name per photograph. The reason for this is that the more letters you have in the photograph the less clear the writing will be.

Q. Can I choose the colour of the sunset?

A. As much as we would love to give everyone their "perfect" coloured sunset, it is just impossible. We have no idea what the colours of the sunset will be until we are standing on the beach watching them appear. We like to believe our loved ones paint the colours of the sunset themselves, let them surprise you :)

Q. Can you write my loved one's name under the sunset of their birthday?

A. Although it is a possibility, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to write your loved one's name on their actual birthday. This is only because the weather affects everything that we do. For instance, it may be raining on that day which makes things almost impossible.

Q. Can you write my loved one's name so that we can have it before their actual birthday?

A. In most cases - yes. We usually require at least 2 weeks notice. To ensure we can write your loved one's name in time please make your purchase as early as you can. In the "Special Instructions To Seller" section in Paypal, please advise us of when you need the photograph by.

Q. Is there an age restriction for the names that you write in the sand?

A. There is no age restriction at The Seashore of Remembrance. We write names for babies, children and adults of any age or gestation.

Q. What beach do you write all of the names at?

A. All of the names are written at Mullaloo Point in Western Australia.

Carly's Speech at Charles' Funeral

Through out my life I have always wondered whether or not Heaven is real.

As I stand before you all here today I would like to tell you about the gift my grandfather gave to me after he let go of this life.

Last Tuesday morning at the exact minute that the sun rose my beautiful Griz passed away. My parents and I drove to the hospital to be with Nan, the rest of our family and of course Griz. As I stood over his weary body and held his hand, I realized that his soul had completely left his body. I was heartbroken that he was gone. I had known him for almost 29 years.

In the late afternoon of that day my family and I drove down to Mullaloo beach to watch Griz's last sunset together. Because of the work that I do for families bereft of their children I photograph sunsets at the beach around six nights a week. In all the hundreds of sunsets I have seen there was something very different about Griz's sunset. The clouds were a navy blue. They were heavy and magnificent. And even though they were beautiful, I feared that when the sun fell behind the clouds that there would not be much of a sunset.

My cousin Holly brought a basket of red rose petals for us to give to the sea in memory of Griz. We released the petals to the sea just as the sun set behind the storm clouds. What happened next took our breath away. The brightest gold lining started to appear on the edge of the storm clouds. Massive rays of light came through and pointed directly up to where the stars would soon appear.

I know that the gold lining on the edge of the storm cloud was my Grandfathers touch as he was receiving his first sunset painting lesson from his great grandson. This gold lining and bright rays of sunlight that appeared was the greatest gift my grandfather has ever given to me. He showed me that Heaven is real and that there is no death.

Our relationship with Griz is not over. It has just changed form. Although we will miss his physical presence, his spirit is all around us and we can still talk to him when ever we want or need to.

I will love my grandfather for the rest of my life and I will do my best to be the greatest person I can be so that on the day when it is my turn to leave this world I will be able to receive my first ever sunset painting lesson from my beautiful son and his wonderful great grandfather.

I love you Griz, forever.

Charles' Life

Charles Morrow was born on 13th June 1923 in Katanning in Western Australia.

His first job was that of a junior storeman. He got his driver’s licence at 17 years of age, but we know for a fact that he actually started driving when he was 14, as so many young lads did in the country back then.

Charles enlisted in the Australian Army at 17, somehow convincing the Defence Force that he was actually 18. He completed his training on Rottnest Island, and was then sent to New Guinea during the Second World War.

After the war Charles returned to Perth, and then shortly after moved to Sydney. There he worked in the Naval Disposals Stores.

One night in 1950 Charles and his brother Bert went to a local dance at the Petersham Town Hall. There he met a beautiful young lady by the name of Shirley Lees. The rest is history. Shirl was 17 at the time, and was rather reluctant to tell Charles her age – he was 26.

He started singing and entered Amateur Hour Competitions – and he won his fair share of these. He entered Jack Davey’s Star Maker Competition – and won. The prize was 75 pounds – a tidy sum in those days.

Charles came back to Perth to see his family, but his heart (and Shirl) were back in Sydney.

Charles and Shirl married in 1953. He changed jobs – and started selling musical instruments. At this time he was also singing professionally on a weekend and actually got paid.

Over the next 5 years came their 3 children - Anne, Scott and John. The Morrow family lived in a War Service home in Kirrawee in NSW. Life for their kids back then was happy and untroubled. Anne, Scott and John have vivid memories of a simple life, with Shirl and Charles doing an amazing job at providing for them when times were hard.

Charles went singing full time for 6 years, he was literally singing for his family’s supper. In 1967 he started working as a sales representative for Furnco Industries, but continued singing each weekend. Scott, John and Anne (and their friends in the street) weren’t allowed to make any noise on a Saturday afternoon, because Charles needed his sleep before going out to work. These
were challenging times for the Morrow family – but they came out the other end all the better for it.

Charles worked his way up the ladder at Furnco, and was offered the position of State Manager in Western Australia. In April 1971 the family moved over to Perth - and fell in love with the place. Anne worked with Charles in the WA office for 7 years. From humble beginnings he built the WA branch from a staff of 2 to a staff of 15 when he left in 1980.

Charles always had a dream to buy a small business. Shirl and Charles bought “Contempo Gallery” – selling imported rugs – not a great idea! To help supplement their income they moved in to WA hand crafted products. In a 7 year period, under the management of Shirl and Charles – “Contempo” ended up being the top seller of hand made products in Perth.

They sold the business in 1984. Charles came in to his own when he started making beautiful jarrah burl clocks and tables in his workshop in Greenwood. This continued for many enjoyable years.

Now that they were semi retired Shirl and Charles started travelling each winter for 3 months at a time – the original “grey nomads”. They went gold prospecting for 2 weeks – hard work and no gold. They stuck to fishing – a much better result.

They travelled extensively around Australia, but fell in love with Exmouth. That became their home away from home – they would travel there and stay for 3 months during the winter.

Back in 1996 Charles was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer – he came through the treatment with flying colours.

The following years were full of fond memories – terrific outings, holidays, and great friendships with the Wembley Probus Club. Painting, computer lessons, typing lessons, learning Japanese, picture framing, furniture making. You name it, Charles could make it. He was always helping all of his kids out with home renovations, shelves in garden sheds, rat walls, custom built kitchen
and laundry cupboards. More treasured memories of morning teas of a Sunday with Val and Don, together they solved all the world’s problems. Family gatherings of a Sunday afternoon. Friendly arguments with Scott and John – he loved that. He had his special spot at the head of the table outside under the patio.

Charles had a special relationship with his two lovely daughters-in-law – Juliann and Hiroko and his son-in-law Red. He adored all his grandchildren – to them he is known as Griz or Grizzy. He was so proud of them – except when they kicked the footy too close to him. The name Grizzy developed into Great Grizzy with the arrival of his great grandchildren.

He shared many happy times – both in the early years and the latter years with his brothers Bert and Bill.

Charles had many interesting experiences in his life – but one in particular stands out – an incident that occurred in August 2010. Charles was in the process of moving his car from the front verge back in to the garage. He put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake. He hurtled down the driveway, scraped the side of the house – crashed through the fence at the end of the garage, managed to miss two trees on his way through, became airborne as he tore through the backyard, crashed through the back fence scaling the sunken barbecue pit in the neighbour’s back yard, and then slid sideways coming to an abrupt halt - wedged against the neighbours back wall – removing interior tiles in the laundry and smashing the water pipe in the process. Whilst this was occurring Scott was running behind him down the driveway. Poor Shirl was yelling out to Scott – “Dad’s dead!” “Dad’s dead!” But he wasn’t dead – he was just stunned with a few scratches. His beloved car was a write-off. After 70 years of driving, this was the day that Charles begrudgingly surrendered his driver’s licence. He went out with a bang – in more ways than one!

During the last couple of months Charles’ illness caused his health to decline, but up until the last few weeks of his life he remained in good spirits – always ready to share a laugh with us!

For the last two days of Charles’ life, he was never left alone. There was always at least one of his family with him.

We thank our wonderful Mum for the amazing care that she gave to Dad in the final years of his life. So many times he said to us – “She’s a pet!”

Charles leaves us with wonderful memories of a beautiful man who loved to whistle, loved his chocolate, loved his brandy, loved his life, and loved his family passionately.

Names in the sand photographs are $20 AUS each. The photograph is emailed to you in a high resolution digital jpeg format.

Once you have paid you will receive an email with your receipt. We will not make contact with you until we have completed your request. Your loved ones name will appear on our wait list.

We are only able to write one name per photograph. Any more than one name will result in a poor quality photograph for printing purposes. The names are also difficult to read if there is more than one name.

Please do not purchase a name in the sand if you have a specific image in your mind of what sort of sunset you would like. As you can see from the collage of sunsets above, the sunsets are completely different each night. We are unable to predict their colours until we are standing on the beach watching them appear. We do not take special requests for colours of sunsets.

We cannot refund money if you are unhappy with the colours of the sunset. So please consider your purchase carefully.

We believe our loved ones in heaven paint the colours of the sunset, let them surprise you :)

To have your loved one's name written in the sand, photographed and emailed to you will take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on sea and weather conditions.
